The new license server should be up and running any time now (I'm thinking today or tomorrow, but it's out of my hands). Much of this is big-time cyberinfrastructure that a single GIS Librarian can't expect to engage alone, but over the course of the institute last summer there were a number of good ideas bandied about between librarian and librarian and between librarians and domain scientists. In fact, it helped a couple of us librarians here at Purdue to develop and teach a geoinformatics course this past semester using many of the ideas and technologies we worked with in La Jolla.

I expect there will be more hands-on work this summer than last, but I don't know. If anyone is interesting in hearing more about it, please contact me offlist (if it's relevant I'll ask to repost).

Please note that I have no stake in the success of GEON or this Summer Institute. I'm forwarding this to gis4lib only because geoinformatics has a lot to do with GIS Librarianship and I suspect this CSIG program isn't on everybody's radar. ccmiller@purdue.eduFri, 23 May 2008 11:14:35 -0400http://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=11332.8609881291723 -117.218627929688New Site Goes Livehttp://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=112The GIS subsection of The Libraries website has been completely overhauled and is now online. Consider having them investigate Kenya! Read on. A few months after the release of the publication Nature's Benefits in Kenya: An Atlas of Ecosystems and Human Well-Being, the GIS data are now available at http://www.wri.org/publication/content/9291. This 96-map report provides a new approach to examining the links between ecosystem services (the benefits derived from nature) and the poor. Through a series of maps and analyses, the authors focus on the environmental resources most Kenyans rely on such as soil, water, forest, rangeland, livestock, and wildlife. The atlas overlays georeferenced statistical information on population and household expenditures with spatial data on ecosystems and their services (water availability, wood supply, wildlife populations, and the like) to yield a picture of how land, people, and prosperity are related in Kenya. Please distribute as you feel necessary. Reminder - May 5-7, 2008 at NCAR Center Green Building 1, Boulder, CO - please register as soon as possible - NCAR is hosting this workshop to assist the NSF in considering how it might most effectively craft programs to support the creation and use of new cyberinfrastructure capabilities to support environmental research and education over the next decade. This workshop is intended as an initial step in identifying key issues and means of addressing them. We do not intend to try and build a consensus for a fully defined proposal or plan, but rather to identify opportunities through stimulating a constructive dialogue among scientists and educators from different environmental communities, and between environmental scientists and information scientists and technologists. Outcome: The product of the workshop will be a white paper that examines opportunities for applying cyberinfrastructure in environmental research and education, identifies significant issues, and provides a roadmap for addressing key questions. The white paper will be submitted to NSF, published on the web, and presented at future scientific and technical conferences. Participation in this workshop is open by invitation and submission of a position statement (see Registration) and funding support to participate is available and is contingent on NSF support eligibility requirements http://www.cyberobservatories.net/events/workshops/20080505/ _______________________________________________ esi mailing list esi@mit.edu http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/esi Close Window ccmiller@purdue.eduFri, 18 Apr 2008 14:02:39 -0400http://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=10639.990667 -105.262069[OKGIS] Geospatial Summer Institutehttp://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=104The Center for Spatial Analysis is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2008 Geospatial Summer Institute Fellowship program. The website shows the locations of more than 100,000 individual photographs from the 1930s to the 1980s. Users can locate a time or area they are interested in, and order those photos from various archival collections, including the IGS archive which contains nearly 40,000 images. More than?950 large-format photomosaic index maps in the IGS archive were scanned?and georeferenced, and then mosaicked to produce 466 county-based images?dating from the 1930s to the 1980s. From these images, a point index was?created showing the upper-right corners of *** 113,035 *** individual?historical aerial photographs. The interactive map allows users to?easily locate a site of interest and determine unique identification?numbers for individual photos. Copies of the photos can then be ordered?from various archival collections, including the IGS archive.

Before attempting to use the IHAPI map, we strongly recommend that users?read the instructions and view the associated IHAPI Video Tutorials.

Archival Organization?Beginning in the 1930s, aerial surveys of Indiana counties were?conducted about every 10 years; between the 1930s and the 1970s, more?than 100,000 aerial photos of the state were taken. Copies of many of?these black-and-white photos exist in archives of the Indiana Geological?Survey, the Indiana State Archives, and various libraries and?governmental agencies. A concise discussion of the uses of aerial photos?can be found here.

Every historical aerial photograph has a unique identification number?(ID) in its upper right corner. The date that the photo was taken?appears in its upper left corner. Anyone interested in retrieving a?particular photo from an archival collection must first determine its ID?number.??For most counties, aerial surveys were conducted along north-south?flight lines, although east-west flight lines were occasionally used.?Along each flight line, photographs typically overlap by as much as 60?percent, so that overlapping pairs of photographs can be viewed?stereoscopically. Adjacent flight lines also overlap.

For each survey, an index map of the county was assembled by stapling?the individual photos together to create a mosaic. The mosaic,?containing hundreds of individual photographs, was then re-photographed?to create a large-format (typically 20 by 24 inch), low-resolution?photomosaic index. In the past, you could obtain identification numbers?of individual photos by physically visiting an archive and locating a?site of interest on a paper copy of the photomosaic index. The?appropriate individual aerial photo could then be retrieved from the?archival collection. NOTE: The individual photos that are available from?archival collections have resolutions that are much superior to that of?corresponding photomosaics.

?Archival Collections?Contact archival collections to determine the availability of your?particular photo of interest, as well as fee schedules for obtaining?copies of the photo.
ccmiller@purdue.eduWed, 05 Mar 2008 10:25:15 -0500http://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=7739.171719 -86.520985February, 2008 NHD Newsletterhttp://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=76Recently, Larry Theller brought the National Hydrography Dataset February 2008 Newsletter to the attention of the PurdueGIS-L. The dot-com commercial sector represents a quarter of the

total. Downloads to this sector has doubled in the past year and has

quadrupled since 2004. This mainly includes environmental engineering

and consulting firms.

The dot-gov and dot-us government sector represents about half the total

downloads. It is difficult to distinguish between Federal and State

agencies, but it appears the Federal sector accounts for about

two-thirds of this. Educational institutions represent about one-fifth

of the download population. The majority of the remaining NHD downloads

can be attributed to the educational, private and non-profit sectors.

The most significant change in the NHD data download profile can be seen

in the increase in the private sector. The volume of downloads among

government entities, educational institutions and non-profit sector have

remained about the same over the past few years.

The NHD viewer offers a variety of formats available for download in

both the 1:24,000 and 1:100,000-scale resolutions. The overwhelming

majority of the downloads from the viewer are by subbasin leaving about

eight percent by county. Other delineations are not significant. High

resolution downloads outnumber medium resolution by about two to one.

The number of medium resolution downloads have remained unchanged while

there is definite growth in high resolution downloads. High resolution

downloads were about one-third greater in 2007 than 2006. Shapefile

downloads were double that of geodatabase downloads in 2007, while in

2006 and 2005 they were about equal. Interestingly, there is a growing

trend in the popularity of shapefile format. Next month, look for a

review of subregion downloads from the ftp site.

National Hydro Network Update by Bruno Simoneau

2008 promises to be a dynamic year for GeoBase and its development of

Canadian watershed data in the National Hydro Network (NHN). Here are some of the functions: "Process

connected river centre lines, check network for specific errors,

generate new node layers for the nodes of the network, attribute network

including stream order, convert network to a measured network, analyze

network and store the results, generalize the network, quality

controlled snapping of sites to the river network, and export river

network data to KML (Google Earth) format. The developer is currently

working on developing a new component for random and stratified point

sampling of river networks. RivEX was designed to run in ESRI ArcGIS

9.0/9.1 on a Windows Microsoft Operating System (Windows 2000 or XP).

RivEX does not require the network extension to run. It will run under

the standard ArcView license of ArcGIS 9. Users who have upgraded to

version ArcGIS 9.2 have reported that RivEX runs. RivEX has been

developed in VBA and sits within an ArcMap document file. RivEX will

process data which is in the format of Shapefile or a Geodatabase

FeatureClass. Polyline, PolylineM and PolylineZ data are all

supported." The quiz ftp://nhdftp.usgs.gov/Quiz/Hydrography31.pdf

was Grays Harbor, Washington. This is where the Chehalis River empties

into the Pacific Ocean. You can find out more about Mike in last

month's newsletter. Others with the correct answer were (in order

received) Jim Sherwood, Joanna Wood, Dave Straub, Mac McKay, Ken Koch,

James Seay, Richard Patton, Anne Johnson, Al Rea, Tom Christy, Ed

Carter, and David Heber.

Grays Harbor is an estuarine bay with a pair of low peninsulas

separating it from the Pacific Ocean, except for an opening about two

miles in width. An estuary is typically the tidal mouth of a river, and

estuaries are often characterized by sedimentation or silt carried in

from terrestrial runoff and, frequently, from offshore. They are made up

of brackish water. Estuaries are more likely to occur on submerged

coasts, where the sea level has risen in relation to the land; this

process floods valleys to form rias and fjords. These can become

estuaries if there is a stream or river flowing into them.

Ed Carter provides some background on the name: "Grays Harbor is named

after Captain Robert Gray who discovered and entered it on May 7, 1792

in the course of his fur-trading voyages along the north Pacific coast

of North America. Gray named the bay Bullfinch Harbor, but it was

afterward named Grays Harbor by Captain George Vancouver, whose

contemporaneous explorations of the region -- the ships of the two

captains had met at sea, only days earlier -- were well publicized at

the time, while Gray's voyages were not. Grays Harbor was the name that

stuck. (A few days later, on May 11 Gray found a navigable channel into

the estuary of the Columbia River, and sailed into it, the first white

man to do so.)"

This month's hydrography quiz can be found at

ftp://nhdftp.usgs.gov/Quiz/Hydrography32.pdf. Students can volunteer at the conference and receive free registration. If you have someone who might benefit from this opportunity to get up close and personal with GIS in Indiana, please pass this information along. We'll take volunteers up until Friday or until the spots are filled. Also, while it may be too late this year, student poster winners receive cash prizes and can be a nice resume booster. Eligibility for the program includes not only untenured tenure-track Purdue faculty, but also Purdue associate professors tenured effective July 1, 2005 and later. This is applicable to Purdue library faculty as well as to those in other disciplines. In order to capitalize on and strengthen relationships between the libraries and faculty in other disciplines, the application process requires a letter of support from a Purdue librarian whom the applicant has consulted regarding the information needs and information-related activities reflected in the proposal. In the letter, the librarian should briefly state the reasons the applicant cannot meet the information needs by using Purdue collections and electronic information resources and, therefore, needs to travel to unique collections beyond Purdue. Applicants who are themselves library faculty members need not submit a letter of support from another Purdue librarian. Please familiarize yourself with the contents of the attached document so that you can advise potential applicants. Additionally, if you fall within the pool of eligible faculty, I encourage you to consider potential relevance of the program to your own scholarly information needs. "ENCLOSED" INFORMATIONccmiller@purdue.eduTue, 02 Oct 2007 14:44:08 -0400http://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=5540.4251396401718 -86.9125467538834Marine Geospatial Ecology Tools (MGET)http://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=56Repost from PurdueGIS Listserv

*quote from esri: http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=15255

Summary*
Marine Geospatial Ecology Tools (MGET), also known as the GeoEco Python
package, is an open source programming library designed for coastal and
marine researchers and GIS analysts who work with spatially-explicit
ecological and oceanographic data in scientific or managerial workflows.
The initial MGET releases will focus on tools useful in habitat studies,
including tools for processing and sampling remotely-sensed
oceanographic data and mapping and filtering ARGOS satellite telemetry.
Subsequent releases will include more advanced tools presently under
development at Duke's Marine Geospatial Ecology Laboratory and elsewhere.

Although "Marine" is the first word in the title, many tools are not
specific to marine problems. The book may include activities from across the curriculum, but we anticipate a primary focus on earth and environmental science, and geography. Prof. Bob Kolvoord, James Madison University, and Prof. Daniel Edelson, Northwestern University, will be serving as the editors for a book of exemplary, classroom-ready GIS activities for My World GIS, a powerful, full- featured GIS tool, that has been developed specifically for use in educational settings. My World combines the power of a professional GIS tool with the ease-of-use and ease-of-administration required for classroom use. Interested participants should complete the application available at http://www.geode.northwestern.edu/staff/Edelson/MyWorld_Applic2.doc or attached here. Each participant will be the author of one chapter consisting of teacher and student materials for a series of GIS- integrated classroom activities lasting from 3-10 class periods. All activities must be correlated to standards and use GIS to support meaningful inquiry. Authors are responsible for obtaining all required data, including the rights to distribute the data commercially as part of the book. The book will include a set of introductory activities to introduce students and teachers to the core functionality of GIS, so individual chapters will be able to assume a basic level of GIS literacy. The specifics of the introductory activities will be determined by the needs of the accepted chapters. The editors will be hosting an authors' workshop at Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL from Thurs. 29 Nov to Sun. 2 Dec. All travel expenses and accommodations will be paid. The agenda for this workshop will be designed to enable authors to complete the first draft of their chapter, so that the editorial process can begin immediately after. Therefore, all authors will be required to submit a complete outline for the activity and all the data that the activity will require prior to the workshop. Previous experience with My World GIS is not required. Technical assistance for My World will be provided by the GEODE Initiative prior to and during the workshop. We anticipate accepting approximately 15 chapter proposals. Chapters may be jointly authored, but there will be limited funding to support the expense of more than one author per chapter to attend the workshop. Upon acceptance of their proposal, authors will receive a free license to My World GIS for their personal use and for one classroom to serve as a field test site for their chapter. The workshop expenses are being supported by the National Science Foundation's program in Instructional Materials Development through the grant entitled "My World GIS: A Geographic Information System for Inquiry-Based Learning" to Northwestern University, Daniel Edelson, PI. These will be easy-going, come-and-leave-as-you-please lunch hour sessions, probably one per month, organized around a light agenda. Ideally, there will be a presentation each time by somebody who wants to draw attention to some developing project, technology, data source, story, or issue, but this probably won't be necessary every time. The first of these will be held in BRNG 1248 on Friday, October 12, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Everyone is welcome, no matter what level of GIS user, spatial analyst, mashup-maker, or curious non-user you might be. The issues I'll be bringing to discuss include:

GIS Day 2007 (I won't ask you to help, just remind everyone they're welcome to submit content and mention some additional details about the event)

a potential map-scanning/rectifying-on-demand project

and a GeoInformatics course being co-developed by the Libraries and EAS slated for Spring 2007 Any other issues are welcome, of course, and you can either let me know about them or just show up with questions and issues. The daily mean discharges have been available over the web for several years, and so have the annual peak discharges. The big news today is that you can now obtain the instantaneous flow data, too. These data are in the form of instantaneous hourly discharges, or 15-minute discharges, or whatever time unit the data were recorded originally at each respective streamflow-gaging station. Folks can download the instantaneous flow data using the following USGS web site: http://ida.water.usgs.gov/ida/ The web site is fairly easy to use. When you go to that web page listed above, find the words "Geographic Area:" and select "Indiana" from the drop down list. That will give you a new drop down list of Indiana streamflow-gaging stations. Select the station you want, then click on "Go." That will send you to a page where you see the range of dates for which the instantaneous flow data are available. Enter the begin and end dates you are interested in, and select your output option, then click on "Retrieve Data." As for the output option, if you want to load the data into Excel later, I'd suggest you select "Save to file," which will provide you with the ever-popular tab-delimited text file. I'd encourage everyone who uses the newly available data to read the warnings provided with the output. It was a massive job to make the instantaneous flow data available, and hopefully folks will find the data very useful. But there are bound to be some imperfections here and there. The available data for most of the long-term Indiana stations begin about Oct. 1, 1987, and end on Sept. 30, 2006. There are no plans at this time to load up any data prior to Oct. 1, 1987 (that's the date the computers became conscious and took over the world). But we will load up the newer data as each water year becomes finalized. Even though the instantaneous flow data are now available over the web, the instantaneous gage-height data are not available over the web at this time. I'm not sure what the long-term plans are in that regard. Lots of data -- enjoy! The going idea is to hold a modest 1-2 hour poster session, then let that lead in to 1-2 hours of talks by Purdue researchers, students, and teachers. These talks can be project updates, state-of-GIS summaries, or next-big-thing/proof of concept demonstrations. We will entertain all ideas and at this point we're willing to expand or contract the event to accommodate. The fundamental idea for this year, though, is for the Purdue GIS community to inform itself about itself; to help foster a more transparent and obvious user community (successive years may have a more outward-facing agenda). I would like to hear from anybody who might be interested in contributing content for this event, likely to be held in Purdue Memorial Union on November 14. We welcome and encourage talks and posters from the realm of traditional GIS as well as innovative, even peculiar applications of spatial data display, visualization, or analysis.
