Name: Eringen, A. Cemal (1921-)

Historical Note: Professor Eringen came to Purdue in 1953 as a professor in engineering sciences after employment in several industries and universities. He had obtained a master's degree at the Advanced Engineering School of Istanbul, Turkey, in 1943, and a Ph.D. at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1948. His teaching and research was in the area of elasticity, wave propagation, molecular theory of gases and liquids, and continuum mechanics. He was a founder of the Society of Engineering Science, and also served as president and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Engineering Science. He was Associate Professor of Engineering Science, 1953-1955 and Professor of Engineering Science, 1955-1966 at Purdue. He resigned in 1967 to accept a position at Princeton University.
