Historical Note: Albert E. Caswell was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and received his doctor's degree from Stanford University in 1911. After two years at Purdue University he came to the University of Oregon in 1913. He was appointed chariman of the department in 1934 and served in that capacity until 1949. He was a National Research Fellow in 1919-20 and during World War II was a member of the staff of the Radiation Laboratory at MIT. Professor Caswell was the author of several papers and of a widely used textbook in general physics. He was Professor Emeritus and former Head of the Department of Physics at the University of Oregon. Professor Caswell died on June 18, 1954 in Eugene, Oregon, at the age of 70.
