Postlethwait is a retired Purdue faculty member from the Department of Biology [Now Biological Sciences]. He pioneered the audio tutorial system of instruction in 1961 which permitted students to "pace" themselves while learning a certain topic. He recounts his teaching method and style. "The greatest experience has been the response of students". He mentions MPATI Midwest Program in Airborne television which began in 1959 and continued until early 1960's. Postlethwait is the recipient of many honors and awards including the Helping Students Learn Award from The Purdue Alumni Association in 1983 and the Charles F. Bessey Award from the Botanical Society of America in 1989. In retirement he is active in the local community involving talks on wild flowers and birdlore.
