Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Heath Family Papers document the business dealings and transactions of one of Lafayette's early prominent families.
Biographical Note
In the 1800s, the Heath family was one of Lafayette's most prominent business and banking families, serving on multiple municipal boards and committees and owning several local businesses and properties. Many of the Heath family business dealings involved John Purdue, a successful Lafayette businessman and founder of Purdue University. In 1847, William Heath and John Purdue were appointed to the Lafayette & Indianapolis Rail Road Company Board of Directors. In 1852, Heath and Purdue served on Lafayette's first public school board. Robert Heath was a lifelong business partner of John Purdue, forming several companies and business alliances with him including incorporation of the Lafayette Bridge Company in 1845 and financially supporting the Lafayette, Muncie, and Bloomington Railroad in the early 1870s. Robert Heath served as one of Purdue's pallbearers in 1876. Edith Heath Hull earned a B.S. from Purdue University in 1891 and a M.S. in 1896.
