Arrangement:

The collection is arranged into five series:

1. Artifacts, circa 1920s (0.45 cubic feet, 1 flat box) The artifacts within the series include pins, a slide rule, hand-made wooden artifacts, a wallet, a funnel, and a silver tray from Robert Matthews' time as a student at Purdue.

2. Materials related to time as a student, 1920-1944 (0.1 cubic feet, 4 folders) This series consists of student directories, a personal diary, a class schedule, newspaper clippings about the swim team, and financial documents regarding student loans.

3. Alumnus records, 1923-1969 (.05 cubic feet, 2 folders) This series consists of reunion programs and announcements, alumni cards, contribution notices, and correspondence. Some correspondence was written between Robert Matthews and Red Mackey.

4. Profesional life, 1957-1951 (.025, 1 folder) This series consists of a pamphlet and newsletter related to Robert Matthews' time working at Peerless Electric.

5. Photographs and postcards, 1909-1958 (.025, 1 folder) This series consists of portraits, postcards, and group photos related to Robert Matthews' family, time as a student, and life post-graduation.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Robert L. Matthews collection (1909-1969) document Matthews' time as a student at Coyne Trade and Engineer School and at Purdue and his alumni relations with Purdue. The collection includes personal records, correspondence, personal artifacts, and photographs.

Collection Historical Note

Robert Matthews (1904-1968) was a member of the Purdue Class of 1927, but attended only from 1923-1925 for engineering.  He remained involved with Purdue post-attendance by financially contributing and attending Purdue Athletics alumni events.  He earned a letter from the Swimming and Diving team for diving.  Matthews attended Coyne Trade and Engineer School Chicago prior to attending Purdue.  After attending Purdue, Matthews was employed by Peerless Electric in Ohio and was an active member of the Cleveland, Ohio Purdue Alumni Club. He returned to campus for alumni reunions and golf outings with other Purdue alumni.  Per correspondence with other alumni within collection, Matthews distributed photographs of the reunions to other alumni.
