Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Dale W. Margerum papers (1955-1974; 0.1 cubic feet) consist of miscellaneous papers collected by Professor Margerum. Two documents are related to Dr. Henry C. Brown, 1979 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry; letter from the Secretary of the Nobel Committee of the Royal Academy of Science, stating that the Nobel Committee had received Margerum’s nomination of Professor H.C. Brown for the Nobel prize and an autobiographical introduction from the book “Boranes in Organic Chemistry,” by Herbert C. Brown, Ithaca New York: Cornell University Press, 1972. The papers also include a pamphlet from the opening of the Richard Bendridge Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry.
Biographical Note
Dale M. Margerum received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Southeast Missouri State University in 1950 and his Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 1955. He was a research chemist at Ames Laboratory from 1952-1953. Margerum joined the staff at Purdue University as an instructor, 1954-1957. He moved up the ranks quickly; assistant professor, 1957-1961; associate professor, 1961-1965; professor, 1965- and now professor emeritus. He was Head of Purdue’s Inorganic Chemistry Division, 1968-1973 and Head of the Department of Chemistry, 1978-1983.
