Biographical Note
Purdue has been serving farmers with disabilities since 1979, when “a farmer with a severe disability contacted Purdue University’s Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, seeking assistance on how to modify his tractor so he could continue farming.” Not long afterwards, the Breaking New Ground (BNG) Resource Center was established as an invitation service for farmers and rural residents in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s AgrAbility Project (established 1990) and several disability-and agriculture-related organizations. Along with the USDA AgrAbility Program and the Indiana AgrAbility Project, the BNG’s focus continues to center on education, networking, direct service, and marketing, as part of their outreach to disabled farmers and agricultural workers and their families.
