Arrangement: Thirty of the cyanotypes have numbers in their bottom corners; 17 of them do not.  The numbered cyanotypes have been arranged in numerical order, while the unnumbered cyanotypes retain their original order.  The Photographs are organized into two folders: Numbered Cyanotypes & Unnumbered Cyanotypes.

Abstract

Cyanotype photographs documenting Purdue buildings, students, faculty and Lafayette structures and citizens.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The William Chester Halstead Photographs (circa 1890s; 0.2 cubic feet) document Purdue buildings, students, faculty, and staff during the 1890s.  The photographs show a variety of buildings, such as the Science Hall, Art Hall, Experiment Station, Purdue Farm Barn, Locomotive Lab, Foundry, Engine Room and Dormitory.  They also feature Purdue student groups, such as the cyclists, drum corps, and artillery.  Photographs of note include the burned-out structure of Havelon (sic) Hall and President Smart in his office.  In addition, the collection also documents structures and people in the Lafayette area.  Types of materials include: cyanotypes and a photo case.

Biographical Note

William Chester Halstead, originally from Kirkpatrick, IN, graduated from Purdue University in 1897 with a degree in Mathematics.  He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
