Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Sanford Unger papers (1961-1974; 0.2 cubic feet) contains several articles concerning the effects of psychedelic drugs on alcoholics and individuals suffering from neurotic disorders, as well as the implication of those drugs on religious visions and mysticism. The collection also documents the correspondence between Aldous and Laura Huxley and Sanford Unger, as well as a DVD and VHS of "LSD: The Spring Grove Experiment."

Biographical Note

Sanford Unger received his BA from Anitoch College in 1953, his MA from Cornell University in 1955, and his PhD from Cornell University in 1960. Unger served as a research scientist at the National Institutes of Health from 1960 to 1965 and Chief of Psychosocial Research at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1965 to 1992. He also was an adjunct faculty member at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from 1966 to 1992. Unger has published several articles including “LSD and Psychotherapy: A Bibliography of the English-Language Literature,” “Mescaline, LSD, Psilocybin, and Personality Change,” “The Use of LSD: Reflections and Observations” and has co-authored articles such as “Psychedelic (LSD) Therapy of Neurotic Disorders: Short Term Effects” and “The Experimental Use of Psychedelic (LSD) Psychotherapy.”
