George Greer completed his undergraduate work at Vassar College and received his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1976. Between his third and fourth year of medical school, he attended a six week seminar at Esalen Institute lead by Dr. Stanislav Grof. Greer speaks of his experiences at Esalen, “This training with internationally respected authorities in the subject using altered states of consciousness in psychotherapy convinced me that the field had a great untapped potential for psychiatry.” Greer completed his psychiatric residency with the San Mateo County Mental Health Services in California and later worked for the Sangre de Cristo Community Mental Health Services. From 1980 to 1985, Greer and his wife, Requa Tolbert, conducted over 100 MDMA therapeutic sessions for 80 individuals; this is the largest published study of the use of MDMA in a therapeutic setting. He served as President of the Psychiatric Medical Association of New Mexico and was the Clinical Director of Mental Health Services for the New Mexico Corrections Department. Greer is the Co-Founder, Medical Director, and Secretary of the Heffter Institute, as well as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. His publications include Therapeutic Uses of MDMA, “Acute Psychological and Neurophysiological Effects of MDMA in Humans,” and “A Method of Conducting Therapeutic Sessions with MDMA.”
