Martin Lynn Thornburg graduated from Purdue in 1915, and he was a part of the Mechanical Engineering faculty from 1921-1924. Thornburg joined the Mechanical Engineering faculty at the University of Arizona in 1924 and remained head of the department until 1957. He played a pivotal role in the Mechanical Engineering Department, at the time paving the way for the future Aerospace program.
In 1917-18 he was captain in the Army Air Corps and taught in the Army School of Military Aeronautics at the University of Illinois.
In the fall of 1926 Charles Lindberg flew into Tucson in the Spirit of St. Louis. He toured the city and University of Arizona in an open car, and had lunch at the University Commons. Shortly after, Professor Thornburg helped students acquire a plan and form a Wildcat Aero Club.
