Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Purdue Artifact collection (1880-2000, 8 cubic feet) documents different historical aspects of Purdue University. Each artifact has been given a unique number and then organized by size, and sometimes format, in boxes. The items are of various sizes in various formats, but all have a Purdue connection. Some examples are a salt and pepper shaker set, handkerchief, window decals, and silver tea spoons.

This is an active collection and will be frequently added to on an ongoing basis

Item 1: ART 3, circa 1940-1980: Black and gold felt Purdue pennant, ca. 1940-1980. (2.5" x 4.5" x 1/16")
Item 2: ART 4, circa 1940s-1960s: Purdue ROTC medal with black and gold ribbon. Medal depicts two men swimming (?), ca. 1940s-1960s. (2.5 " x 1.25" x 1/16")
Item 3: ART 14, 1970s: Purdue University commemorative coin. Image on obverse is of Frederick L. Hovde with this text "1956-President, Purdue University-1971- Frederick L. Hovde." Image in the reverse is of the Purdue Griffin with the text "Purdue University," 1970s. (3/4" x 1/8", copper in color)
Item 4: ART 16, circa 1880s: Advertising card from "Standard, The Popular Confectioner" in the shape of the Old Oaken Bucket. On the from contains the text of a poem and this statement "Copyright C. E. Morrell, 1883," ca. 1880s. (4" x 5 ¼ ", color)
Item 5: ART 35, circa 1930s: Purdue anvil paper weight. Metal paperweight in the shape of an anvil with "PURDUE" stamped on each side. Top is painted in gold and the bottom is painted black. ca. 1930s. Gift from David Hovde, 28 Jan. 2008 (11/2 x 3 x 1 ¼").
Item 6: ART 36, circa 1920s: Sterling silver spoon. The spoon has a handled decorated with a pen and ink well, globe, an owl standing on three books, and an oil lamp. The shallow bowl has been etched with a scene of the campus drive and with this caption "Campus Drive Purdue Univ Lafayette, IND." Ca. 1920s. Purchased from eBay January 2008 (5 ½ x 1 ¼ x ½").
