Name: Purdue Academic Advising Association

Historical Note: The Purdue Academic Advising Association (PACADA) was formed in 1987 as a result of a series of forums on advising at Purdue. The original volunteer committee consisted of members from various departments at the university, including Pharmacy, Management, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education, University Division, and Science. The goals of PACADA in its inception were "to promote quality academic advising at Purdue University," "to advance professional development for its members," and "to heighten awareness" of advisors and people involved in advising (Fodrea, Ware, Mills, Bowling, & Landgrebe 3). In 1988, PACADA was recognized by the National Academic Advisors Association (NACADA) with the Outstanding Institutional Advising Program award. Throughout the years, PACADA promoted academic advising through a series of events, such as open houses and Boiler Gold Rush presentations. They contributed to professional development by meeting for regular retreats and presenting at NACADA's annual conference and the Great Lakes regional conference. It became officially affiliated with NACADA from 1991-1992. In 2001, PACADA developed a vision for the organization that included being "the authoritative source for information about academic advising at Purdue," anticipating and responding "to changes in higher education," and fostering "a continually-evolving membership" (Fodrea et al. 18). In 2007, the association celebrated ints 20th anniversary.
